Facility – Biomedical Sciences Laboratory

Description

Biomedical Sciences Laboratory is affiliated under IJN-UTM Cardiovascular Engineering Centre (IJN). Biomedical Sciences Laboratory is positioned at Level 3, Building V01, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia. This laboratory is designed to accommodate various research on bioactive biomaterials including the fabrication of physiological scaffolds, the development of implant coating, the fabrication of physiological hydrogels and the synthesisation of microcapsules. Those research are dealing with bioactive materials to improve the physiological functions through the mediation of artificial tissues/organs. Several research are also addressing the complication of bacterial infection by utilising antibacterial agents such as silver, chlorhexidine, natural herbs, etc. There are three main activities, currently, on-going in this laboratory: Sample preparation, performance test and antibacterial analysis. The sample preparation includes the casting fabrication procedure, immobilisation procedure, electrodeposition, electropolishing procedure, surface cleaning, scaffold printing etc. While the performance tests include simulated body fluid (SBF) bioactivity test, element release test and degradation test. There is a specific room in this laboratory, equipped with biosafety cabinet Type II to perform antibacterial analyses of zone inhibition, bacterial count percentage, live/dead staining and bacterial attachment.
